‘Oh no honey, it’s 44’’
So I finally got my Vegas experience and although it wasn’t a great success from a money point of view, it was a great first experience.
Like every player I’ve wandered about what Vegas would be like ever since I first played cards, watched 2 months 2 million and saw the famous Chris Moneymaker footage.
We go back roughly six years in time and we found a very young me in New Zealand. I was there for a Marketing internship and was already grinding the low stakes online .If you ever have the opportunity for sure go to New Zealand, and play in the SkyCity Tower Casino in Auckland. Very nice poker room with a view over the whole city . I always sold a bit of action to play live because I definitely wasn’t rolled for those games, being an intern student.
Anyways, my internship ended and I have my good friend Rick visiting me all the way from Holland. We find ourselves sitting in the Irish Pub, drinking Heino’s.
We’ve had a good amount of them and I notice an older woman a few tables further down winking at me. I’m 22 and tell Rick what I just noticed. Being a true friend he immediately encourages me to seal the deal. ‘A true milf man, you have to go for it’. I approach her, we have a drink and she tells me she’s 34 years old and from Brazil. 12 years age difference and from South America, nice.
We end up in her hotel room and the next day Rick, me and another guy are off the South Island. I can still remember the cab driver laughing when I told him about what happened the night before. During our trip in the South Island we visited the casino in Christchurch. I’m the first one to sit down and there’s an Asian gentleman next to me in seat 1, he’s in the middle of a big pot when he is handed the hot tea he ordered. Being polite he decided to take it off the waitress and put it on one of the tables close to him, but not without getting up from his chair. It was his turn to act and when he turned around, literally 10 seconds later, he saw that the dealer mucked his hand. This led to an incredible outburst which was very understandable to be honest. His hand must have been very strong. Poker is weird, if someone gets screwed it’s always funny, except when it’s you. It’s like seeing people miss the train after giving it all during a last sprint, it never gets old.
I didn’t speak to the Brazilian woman but when we were back in Auckland I decided to contact her. She’s keen to meet again that night, she’s staying at another hotel.
Being a young gentleman I invite her to a classy place for some drinks. We’re casually talking and I mention I really would love to go to Vegas one day. She said ‘Oh it’s great I’ve been there 15 years ago’. I ask her how that’s possible because she’s 34 and you have to be 21 to go out and play. She looks at me and says ‘Oh honey, no not 34, 44’. Well this was certainly interesting, the age difference wasn’t 12 but 22 years. We had a great night and apparently she focused more on her performance between the sheets than she did on making breakfasts in the past 44 years. Worst breakfast of my life.
Back in the now, I’ve returned home from Vegas and the money part starts worrying me a bit in the back of my mind. It’s not that I didn’t have money, I just didn’t want to spend money while being home. Money had better purposes, I’d rather spend it towards experiences like the Vegas trip and finding yourself in spots to sleep with 22 year older woman. However, the gap year was a calculated decision, so at the end of the day it would be fine. The only thing you can do is keep showing up and play your best.
Within 5 days I got a really good run online and won the full 5k back, this is great. Vegas has basically been turned into a free trip now. In the meantime Gary let’s me know he’s staying close to the mailbox while being home, he doesn’t want his mom or dad to find a hospital bill. I picture the scene out of Harry Potter where Harry is waiting for his letter from Hogwarts. Things are going a whole lot better for our other Irish friend Clicki, he made the final table of the Crazy 888 WSOP event! One thing is sure, that backer he wanted to keep happy, he must have been very happy.

Man Detained in Ongoing Child Porn Case Because of Alleged Plot to Assassinate Joe Biden

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 64%. (I'm a bot)
The judge's reasoning? Authorities said the defendant plotted to assassinate Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.
Investigators described Treisman multiple times discuss committing a mass shooting, in one instance allegedly saying was "Going to do a columbine for a while []." Also, video allegedly from the defendant's phone purportedly showed him driving by the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, where a gunman killed 58 people and injured about 500 more on October 1, 2017.
Treisman allegedly had also downloaded footage of the Christchurch, New Zealand mosque shooting on March 21, 2020, and performed internet searches in connection to that.
An April 8, 2020 internet post attributed to the defendant stated he was "Going to do a columbine for a while, [but] I think it would better to put it towards something more memorable." Seven days later, he allegedly posted a meme featuring the caption "Should I kill joe biden?" He allegedly looked up Biden's home address, purchasing an AR-15 in New Hampshire, going to a Wendy's within four miles of Biden's home, and writing a checklist ending with "Execute."
Treisman allegedly wrote on Reddit that he had to "Save bernie," several days after Sen. Bernie Sanders suspended his campaign for president, according to The Washington Post.
In the filing, a defense lawyer was said to have mentioned that Treisman was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome at age 12, but the defendant allegedly denied in a May 29, 2020 interview with law enforcement that he had mental health conditions.

Christmas day activities - 2019 edition

Christmas Day 2019
This is an update from last year's list which is an update of some list from a year or two ago.
Outdoor Activities
If the weather is good (check forecast[1]), here's some outdoor activities:
[1] Weather forecasts by Metservice and Weather Watch.
Indoor Activities:
Event searches
Public Transport
Auckland Transport's Public Transport holiday timetables from 23 December 2019 - 12 January 2020. Waiheke ferry timetable (pdf).
Food and Drink
Go to the supermarket on Christmas Eve to stock up on food and essentials. No supermarket and most businesses will be closed on Christmas Day. Christmas Day is one of very few mandatory public holidays in NZ, even the casino is closed 24 hours. Only places allowed to remain open are petrol stations, some fast food places and restaurants.
Hospitality businesses (restaurants, cafes etc) are able to charge a public holiday surcharge if they open on public holidays. If they do so they have to state clearly (ie sign at the door, or counter or menu). This public holidays are 25 and 26 December 2018, and 1 and 2 January 2019. FYI 26 December is also known as Boxing day in NZ.
Alcohol cannot be served unless with a meal[2]. So if something that looks like a pub is open, it is highly likely they are open to serve meals and you can order an alcoholic drink with your meal.
Restaurants that are open tend to be fast food places like McDs, KFC, restaurants that are part of hotels, a few ethnic restaurants and maybe a handful of others.
[2] That particular law applies only to Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Christmas Day as well as before 1pm on Anzac Day. Legislation: Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012. Despite the date of the act, the law has been around for some time. 2010 news article about it. Sale and supply on Anzac Day morning, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Christmas Day restricted: on-licences.
Without any particular order:
Other essential info
Alcohol and smoking in public areas
Please note that there's usually an alcohol ban in many public areas like bus stops, parks, reserves etc. This means you are banned from consuming alcohol publicly unless you are in a licenced establishment (ie restaurant). Alcohol bans are either for an event, for extended periods or permanent. For more information about alcohol ban in Auckland.
Auckland Smokefree policy has a list of places where smoking is not permitted. This isn't limited to indoor areas only. It also includes parks, playgrounds, bus stops.
With NY celebrations coming up I won't be surprised if there's both alcohol and fire bans in popular beach areas and parks too.
Fire Season
Fire and Emergency New Zealand is updating the fire seasons for Auckland. From Monday 2 December it will declare a restricted season across greater Auckland and a prohibited fire season across all the islands of the Hauraki Gulf. A prohibited season means a total fire ban, with any current fire permits for the area suspended from the date the prohibited season starts. A restricted fire season means any open-air fires will need a permit.

Road is too narrow for both you and a single cyclist - going two abreast is safer as it makes this obvious. You would have to cross the center line anyway, an extra meter or so right doesn't make a difference for you.
Those "Share the road" signs are aimed at people like you.
itikex has bravely declared
They're replacing the old sewer main that runs down the whole length of the road. Since its a major shopping area and bus route this is going to take ages and be a ball-ache. The pipes are something like 80 years old and 4 meters deep if I'm not mistaken

Auckland Christmas Day activities

Below is a list I posted as reply to a tourist's query in /newzealand. I am posting this list here in case there are visitors or new Aucklanders. I realise most of us know about this.
Please be nice and kind to all.
Outdoor Activities
If the weather is good (unfortunately not according to forecast[1]), here's some outdoor activities:
[1] Weather forecasts by Metservice and Weather Watch.
Indoor Activities:
Public Transport
Public transport will be on a Sunday timetable in Auckland. https://at.govt.nz/bus-train-ferry/ Bus, train and ferry Christmas holiday timetables. From 24 December 2018 to 6 January 2019, most public transport services will be operating to a Christmas/New Year holiday timetable.
Food and Drink
Go to the supermarket today (Christmas Eve) to stock up on food and essentials. No supermarket and most businesses will be closed on Christmas Day. Christmas Day is one of very few mandatory public holidays in NZ, even the casino is closed 24 hours. Only places allowed to remain open are petrol stations and restaurants.
Alcohol cannot be served unless with a meal. So if something that looks like a pub is open, it is highly likely they are open to serve meals and you can order an alcoholic drink with your meal.
Restaurants open tend to be fast food places like McDs, KFC, restaurants that are part of hotels, a few ethnic restaurants and maybe a handful of others.
Some of the top restaurants shut down from either today or Monday for a few weeks, unless they are part of a hotel or one of the few known to offer a christmas day meal.

A.I. Security Cameras Are the Latest High-Tech Attempt to Combat Mass Shooters

In July, Shagaf Khan, a longtime member of the Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, and president of the region’s Muslim association, froze as one gunman after another entered the house of worship. Just four months prior, the mosque had been ground zero for that country’s deadliest massacre, in which the attacker live-streamed on Facebook his shooting rampage that killed 51 and wounded 49.
This time, the guns were part of a drill. Police officers were simulating a siege on the mosque, brandishing a variety of firearms to test a new high-tech security system developed by Athena Security.
With the help of artificial intelligence, surveillance cameras mounted inside and outside the mosque recognized lethal threats within seconds. They set in motion a rapid emergency response, alerting authorities and ultimately the congregants inside of imminent danger. “We were impressed,” Khan says of the technology’s performance that day. “We saw all kinds of arms—whether it be a pistol or a larger gun. All of them were detected.”
Mass shootings like the one in New Zealand, and more recent ones in Dayton, El Paso, and Odessa, Texas, are prompting some businesses and schools to install A.I.-powered security systems. The hope is that the emerging technology will help save lives in a mass shooting, which, according to Mass Shooting Tracker, a crowdsourced database, occurs an average of at least once a day somewhere in the land of the free, home of the brave.
Chris Ciabarra, CTO of Athena Security, installs his firm’s security system at Archbishop Wood High School in Warminster, Pa.Courtesy of AthenaStill, there’s only so much cameras and computers can do to stop a determined gunman armed with an AR-15-style weapon. Furthermore, the technology is prone to occasional false positives, while critics worry about the privacy implications of monitoring for firearms anyone and everyone who happens to be walking by.
Whatever the case, investors are pouring money into intelligent security. Athena Security, a year-old startup based in Austin, has raised $5.5 million. The Israeli firm AnyVision, meanwhile, closed a $74 million funding round in June, and Canada’s Patriot One Technologies, listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange, has raised $87 million Canadian ($65 million U.S.).
The recent rise of A.I.-based security systems is tied to improvements in image recognition, a technology that tries to identify what’s in photographs or video stills. In this case, the goal is to zero in on what’s often easily overlooked—deadly weapons and suspicious behavior that signal an impending violent act.
Athena’s technology works by analyzing as little as three seconds of surveillance footage, or 90 individual frames of video. Its algorithms are trained to look for both dangerous objects and the menacing movements of individuals—say, a person brandishing a Glock pistol while approaching a school.
Critics worry about the privacy implications of monitoring for firearms anyone and everyone who happens to be walking by.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The tech will lock in on that scene, pulling in more frames to analyze before notifying the on-duty Athena technician or a security officer on-site to verify the threat. If the danger is real, the security staff can sound the alarm, locking down the school, office complex, or place of worship and preventing an armed attacker from entering.
Earlier this year, the company found just one weak spot: Its algorithms failed to spot the handgun or assault rifle being carried by a person 30 feet away and pointing straight at the camera. In every other scenario tested—the gun angled to the right or left, the gunman in motion with the gun, the weapon held at any angle within 25 feet of the camera—the detection rate was 100%.
Spotting guns is the feature that clients are most interested in, explains Chris Ciabarra, Athena’s cofounder and chief technology officer. But they also ask for harder-to-spot threats, which is why in September the company introduced updated software that’s supposed to home in on knives (over six inches) and fights (punching, kicking, pushing). The technology costs $100 monthly per camera.
What Athena tries to avoid is making its system so overzealous that it mistakes any shiny black object—an iPhone, say—for a handgun. Ciabarra says that newly installed technology may flag two or three false positives per camera per day that on-duty security staff must vet. “The alert pops up on a screen, and they click yes or no,” Ciabarra says. “The last thing we want is for police to be called to a scene when they’re not supposed to be.”
Patriot One, the Canadian company, uses a combination of machine learning and microwave-radar technology to spot hidden threats. Its sensors act as a kind of long-range metal detector that identifies concealed weapons, including guns, knives, and bombs.
With the help of microwave radar—the hardware for which can be hidden, as in these planters—and machine learning, this Canadian firm’s tech can spot and identify visible or hidden threats like guns, knives, and bombs.Courtesy of Patriot OneSignals that bounce off solid objects are instantly analyzed for a match in the company’s weapons database. The system’s machine learning distinguishes between the highly suspect (say, an assault rifle smuggled in a suitcase) and the benign (a mobile phone in a jacket pocket), and then, if necessary, alerts security personnel. “It’s all about smart, distributed, low-cost networked security,” says Martin Cronin, the company’s CEO.
Patriot One’s hardware is installed in schools, offices, and public venues including the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino and the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks. It costs just under $50,000 per installation, plus an annual $10,000 fee.
Cronin, a former diplomat for the British Foreign Office, says interest in his company’s technology picked up significantly after the 2017 Mandalay Bay shooting in Las Vegas in which a lone gunman killed 58 and wounded 422. Cronin won’t get drawn into hypotheticals about whether Patriot One’s system, called PatScan, could have prevented it.
But, he says, that type of incident—weapons in bags brought into a hotel—is precisely what the technology is designed to prevent. “Yes, in principle, we will detect those and generate an alert so that security could respond before an incident could happen,” Cronin says.

Keeping Watch

A growing number of companies are selling A.I.-powered security systems that detect guns and other weapons.

Athena Security

Using image-recognition technology, this Austin firm’s security system analyzes surveillance video for firearms and knives.

Patriot One Technologies

With the help of microwave radar and machine learning, this Canadian firm’s tech can spot and identify visible or hidden threats like guns, knives, and bombs.

AnyVision

This Israeli firm has developed a “computer vision” platform that works with most networked security cameras to recognize faces and body types along with objects that resemble a security threat.
Using A.I. for security is fast becoming a hot-button issue. Digital-rights advocacy groups and politicians, from San Francisco’s board of supervisors to Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, have called for banning facial-recognition algorithms for policing. In March, the Commercial Facial Recognition Privacy Act was introduced in the U.S. Senate, a bipartisan bill that could codify privacy rights, potentially limiting what A.I.-powered security systems can do.
“We need guardrails to ensure that as this technology continues to develop, it is implemented responsibly,” says Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), who cosponsored the bill with Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii).
Patriot One and Athena Security say that one of the biggest misconceptions about the use of their security systems is a subsequent loss of privacy. Both companies say their technologies don’t record, store, or share an individual’s biometric data.
But Cronin acknowledges that he gets a lot of questions about how Patriot One’s technology differs—if at all—from how, say, China uses facial-recognition technologies to track political foes. “To that I say, ‘This isn’t what this technology is about. It’s to keep people safe, in a public or a private environment,’ ” Cronin contends.
In Christchurch, Khan has other concerns. In the aftermath of the massacre, his job as one of the congregation’s administrative leaders has morphed into caretaker, counselor, and security chief. He’s just trying to restore a bit of normalcy.
Even with the new security system and a beefed-up police presence, some congregants are too scared to return. Khan doesn’t know if they’ll come back, but he’s beginning to feel better about the safety and well-being of those who have remained. No technology is foolproof, he says: “But at least we have these technologies in place that can help prevent this kind of thing happening.”
